The Recording studios

607

In the sixth floor of the building are the recording studios. They consist of structurally identical control rooms and two studio rooms with different design and dimensions. The studios are acoustically isolated from the rest of the building by floating, i.e. by building new rooms within the existing rooms. This way the sound isolation and the acoustics of the rooms are very good. Also the air-conditioning is designed to operate at extremely low noise levels. The recording rooms can be freely used with either of the control rooms. Also the lighting studio 601 can be utilized as a recoding space for large scale music recording.

The control rooms are designed to ensure largest possible listening area for course work. The monitor system utilises active speakers from Genelec 8050-series. The surround listening environment is calibrated and ITU-775-compliant. It is possible to produce, listen and edit sound material in many formats from stereophonic up to 6.1.-surround sound. The students have an opportunity to work with Audio Workstations on both MacOS and Windows-platforms.

Lighting studio

General

Lighting studio is a laboratory space rather than a performance space. It is not only a black box, there are windows and light tones on walls too. The stage area can be turned to black with curtains. The space is not approved for public performances, but it can seat up to 40 people.

For educational purposes the layout for the technology is transparent. There are fixed dimmers and motorized trusses in the Space. The cabling includes socapex, DMX, ethernet, fibre optic, microphone, 3-phase power, relay switched AV power and direct AC mains in several locations around the space.

Lighting bridges in two levels give easy access for all lighting bars. The studio is small enough for quick, efficient working and big enough to try things out for real.

The floor is black film faced plywood. It is possible to use staple gun and screws on the floor. It is possible to use smoke, haze and mist in the space. There is a timer switch for the fire alarm smoke detectors. The extensive heat from the lighting fixtures is cooled down with district cooling convectors.

There is a little lobby for the lighting studio. There is a sound isolated window to the next door recording studio.

Dimensions

Area 225 m² (2400 sqf), Foyer 53 m²

Depth 15,8 m (58ft)
Width 15,6 m (51ft)
Height 7,6 m (25ft)

Rigging

Lighting bars are 50 mm in diameter and are rated to 80 kg/m. The lighting bridge rails have a flipping centre bar to add space for large fixtures.

There are permanently 6 trusses, 6m long, on half ton chain hoists. The trusses can be moved to any position along the length of the space. Instead of ladders, work can be done from Esca 3000 working platform, working height 5,5m.

There are front and rear projection screens with and without frames and one motorized screen.

Sound

Basic Sound system with 6 Nexo PS8 loudspeakers and 2 LS400 subwoofers and Nexo amplifiers

Dimmers

There are 25 Socapex outputs (for 150 channels) trough out the space and 60 permanent dimmers and 84 portable channels in road cases.

Moving light

There are 36 moving lights. The set consists of 12 VL1000 arc and tungsten versions and classic VL5 B fixtures. For the club/rock type moving light needs we do have 12 Robe Color 250AT and 6 Robe Scan 250 XT.

Conventional fixtures

The conventional rig, some 250 pcs, consists of ETC, Selecon, Arri, Strand and Dexel fixtures. In addition there are color changing Chroma-Q Color Block LED fixtures, strobos, UV spots, tubular ripple effect and even fluorescent soft lights for video lighting.

Lightboards

For moving light control there are Grand MA (light and micro) and Chamsys MQ100 light boards. Compulite Spark and Strand series 200 are for conventional lighting. For visualisation there are ESP Vision and WYSIWYG software’s.

Video
